Why the Brethren Mutual Aid Share Fund?

Mutual Aid Agency is not a typical insurance agency: We come from a rich tradition of community, mutual service, and a commitment to serving those in need. Our Brethren roots set us apart from other agencies, and we remain faithfully committed to our heritage to this day.

Our mission goes beyond insurance. MAA stands at the ready to lend a helping hand, share resources, and bear each other’s burdens during times of crisis. Our desire is to be something more than just our membership: we want to become mutual aid.

That is why we founded the Brethren Mutual Aid Share Fund 25 years ago.

The Share Fund is a nonprofit corporation, created to assist Brethren and Anabaptist faith churches, camps, and related ministries with the caring and sharing work they do within their congregations and communities. MAA tithes to this fund annually, hoping to enhance the lives of others through this financial partnership.

How does it work?

When a family finds themselves in crisis—be it sudden job loss, property destruction, burial expenses, medical bills, or other unexpected financial hardships—their church can apply for aid on their behalf. In doing so, the congregation promises to partner with the Share Fundby donating a matching financial gift.

Why does the Share Fund operate this way, rather than receive applications straight from those in need? The Share Fund believes the church—and specifically the congregation—is the “most meaningful channel for decision making...where sharing within the church family takes on its deepest meaning.”

Once an application has been submitted, an administrator of the Brethren Mutual Aid Share Fund reviews the request, giving up to $500 per eligible church annually.

When you choose to work with us, you’re also choosing to give to the Share Fund. MAA donates a portion of its profits directly to the Share Fund, which means that a percentage of your payment goes directly to those experiencing times of crisis.

In 2020, faced with the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, the Share Fund board elected to double all Share Fund grant requests related to the virus. By offering this added relief, we are pleased to further our mission and honor our heritage: a willingness to share generously with those in need.

Whether it means working diligently to provide you with excellence in insurance coverage or donating to those in need, MAA is dedicated to serving those around us. We know we’re a different kind of insurance agency—we wouldn’t have it any other way.
