Faith, Family, and Fire Safety: A Home for the Holidays Checklist

Archive

The holidays invite us to slow down, gather close, and savor the warmth of home.

Whether it’s the scent of cookies from the oven, the soft glow of Christmas lights, or a familiar hymn echoing through the living room, this season reminds us that faith and family are worth protecting.

But amid the beauty and bustle, it’s also one of the most common times of year for home fires and accidents.

With more cooking, more decorations, and more people under one roof, a little extra preparation can go a long way toward peace of mind.

At Mutual Aid Agency, we believe that protecting what matters most is an act of care.

It’s not about fear—it’s about stewardship. When we take steps to safeguard our homes and gatherings, we’re caring for the people and memories that make this season special.

Here’s a short checklist to help you keep your holiday home full of joy, light, and safety.

1. Fire-Safe Home Basics

A well-prepared home lets you focus on fellowship, not worry. Before the first guest arrives or the first candle is lit, take ten minutes for a safety walkthrough.

Check the essentials:

  • Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors: Test alarms and replace batteries. Make sure you have one on every level, especially near bedrooms.
  • Fire extinguisher: Keep one in or near the kitchen—and make sure everyone in the home knows how to use it.
  • Electrical cords: Don’t overload outlets or run cords under rugs. If you notice fraying or heat, replace them immediately.
  • Exits and hallways: Clear clutter to ensure everyone can get out safely in an emergency.

Even these small steps can prevent big problems. Consider it part of your hospitality—making your home as safe and welcoming as possible for those who gather inside it.

2. Decking the Halls with Care

The sparkle of the season is part of what makes it special—but decorations bring their own risks. With just a little attention, you can enjoy all the beauty without the hazards.

Trees, Lights & Décor

  • Choose freshness: If you use a real tree, make sure it’s fresh and water it daily. A dry tree can catch fire in seconds.
  • Placement matters: Keep the tree at least three feet from fireplaces, radiators, or space heaters—and never block an exit.
  • Inspect your lights: Check for cracked sockets or frayed wires before hanging. Use only lights labeled for safety testing and match indoor/outdoor use correctly.
  • Limit your load: Don’t connect more than three standard strands of lights, and unplug them before bed or when leaving the house.
  • Candlelight glow: Keep candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn, and consider flameless candles for centerpieces or window displays.

Kitchen Comforts and Crock-Pot Corners

Between cookie trays, casseroles, and slow cookers simmering for hours, the kitchen becomes the heart of the holidays—and the highest-risk area for fires.

  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking, especially when frying or broiling.
  • Keep flammable items like dish towels, wrapping paper, or décor away from burners.
  • Place slow cookers on a heat-safe counter, away from edges and cords that can snag.
  • Use timers as reminders when multiple dishes are going at once.
  • For oven-heavy meals, give appliances time to cool before wiping or cleaning.

The best holiday meal is one enjoyed safely—without the smell of something burning.

3. Heating and Hospitality

The season of warmth can quite literally mean more warmth—fireplaces, space heaters, and cozy blankets all come into play.

Keep things safe and snug:

  • Have your fireplace or chimney cleaned before winter use.
  • Use a spark guard and dispose of ashes in a metal container, away from the house.
  • Place space heaters on level, non-flammable surfaces, at least three feet from furniture or curtains, and never plug them into extension cords.
  • Double-check that exits and walkways stay clear of cords, gifts, and décor—especially with guests in the house.
  • Keep an eye on pets and children near any heat source.

4. Staying Covered and Connected

Even the most careful planning can’t prevent every surprise, which is why the right protection matters.

Before the season is in full swing, take a few minutes to review your homeowners or renters policy.

Ask yourself:

  • Are your contents and valuables fully covered if something unexpected happens?
  • Would your policy help with temporary housing after a fire or storm?
  • Do you have coverage for special items or collectibles (like heirloom ornaments or instruments used in holiday services)?

At Mutual Aid Agency, we see insurance as more than a policy—it’s a partnership. By protecting what’s in your care, you’re also protecting your peace of mind and helping others through our Program of Mutuality, which supports those in crisis through the Brethren Mutual Aid Share Fund.

5. A Holiday Home Rooted in Care

The holidays are about gathering, giving, and gratitude. Taking time to check cords, water trees, test alarms, or review coverage isn’t about worry—it’s about love in action.

Because when we prepare our homes, we protect the memories made within them.

When we review our coverage, we safeguard our ability to rebuild and help others do the same.

And when we take care of our people, we reflect the heart of mutual aid itself.

From all of us at Mutual Aid Agency, may your season be filled with peace, joy, and the steady comfort of knowing your home—and those within it—are safe and cared for.
