What to Expect when the Unexpected Happens
What to Expect when the Unexpected Happens
The following are some frequently asked questions that we receive at Mutual Aid Agency regarding the claims process:
• When do I need to make a claim on my home, car, or ministry?
It is best to notify the insurance company or agency as soon as you have all the necessary information to submit the claim. The sooner we hear from you, the quicker we can get your claim submitted, and the closer you will be to getting reimbursed. If you feel the damage to your property could be less or just a little more than your deductible, it could be beneficial to get a quote for repairs before making a claim.
• What do I need to have ready before I call to make a claim?
For property claims, know where the damage is, when it took place and have a description of what happened. Auto claims require a lot more information, including but not limited to who the driver was, others involved, injuries, any police report, and damage information such as where, when, and how. Photos and videos are a great record to have on hand, especially if you have to make emergency repairs before the adjuster has a chance to do their inspection.
• How do I make a claim?
You can call your agency directly or call your insurance carrier. The more information you provide, the better the company will have the information needed to assign an adjuster to your claim case. Do not make any repairs, besides those needed to secure your property before an adjuster has inspected the claim loss.
• What can I expect to happen after the claim is filed?
The length of time the process takes depends on lots of factors and the severity of the claim. Once a claim is submitted, you can typically expect to hear from an adjuster within two business days. The adjuster will be able to provide more details of the claims process after he or she has inspected the loss.
• I have been in a small accident - what should I do first?
Make sure that everyone involved is all right and get to safety if needed. File an accident report with local law enforcement. Exchange insurance information with the other party involved. Notify your agent or carrier to get the claim process started.
• My property has damage - is that something I should call my agent about before I call a repairman?
You have a duty to make reasonable repairs to protect the property. If this is necessary, keep receipts and take photos before any repairs take place. We would suggest submitting the claim and waiting for an adjuster to inspect the damage before completing repairs if possible. Coverage can be uncertain if the adjuster is not able to inspect or investigate due to repairs already being completed. The adjuster will have to be able to determine the cause of loss to ensure that it is covered by the insurance policy.
What should I do after a claim is settled if I have a total loss to a vehicle or building?
It is your responsibility to contact Mutual Aid Agency to remove the totaled vehicle or building. After the claim is settled, you, as the insured, have the option to remove the property or repair it. The claims department will let you know what your options are after a total loss. You are always welcome to call the claims adjuster or Mutual Aid Agency if you have additional questions about your claim.
Important to Know:
Insurance is for the BIG losses; even if the loss is over your deductible, you may want to consider not making a claim, especially if the amount you will receive from insurance will be small. A high claims frequency can put you in danger of higher rates or cancellation.
